"Carly is grace, confidence, originality, and the right amount of sexy swagger all at once."

DC Music Review

Bio

Based out of Washington, DC, Carly Harvey combines Blues, Jazz, Soul and Americana Roots styles to create a unique sound that calls to mind Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, and Nina Simone, with a little Ella Fitzgerald thrown in for good measure. In July 2018, Carly was featured in Big City Blues Magazine as one of the youngest Blues artists to watch. She has had the privilege of sharing the stage with iconic musicians including Annika Chambers, Ron Holloway, Kebbie Williams, Ephraim Owens, Cory Henry, Kofi Burbridge, Junior Marvin, and Susan Tedeschi - an artist whose work has been foundational to her musical evolution.

Carly is a two time D.C. Blues Society Battle of the Bands Winner (Duo - 2016, Band - 2018) and was proclaimed D.C.'s Queen of the Blues in 2016 by Dr. Nick Johnson of WPFW Radio. Her band, Kiss & Ride represented Washington D.C. in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January of 2019 where they advanced to the semi-finals. That same year,  Carly released a new EP titled Kiss & Ride: Vol. 1, and the hit single, "She Ain't Me" is now charting on regional blues radio stations. She was shortly after voted 2nd place for Best Performance Artist in Washington City Paper's " Best of D.C. 2019".

In 2021, Carly was nominated 7 times and won the WAMMIE award for Best Blues Artist/Band.

International crossover album titled Among The Stars and an EP titled Y.A.M.W.A.O. with Italian producer/composer Taste of Dream is an additional project that has allowed Carly to explore an element of her musicianship beyond the Blues. The single, "Caruso" from Among The Stars has been charting in Italy, Spain and Germany for the past 4 years and made its way on to Cosmopolis,  a compilation of Radio Monte Carlo by Papa DJ on the Warner Music Italy label.

Carly is a Tsalagi and Tuscarora descendant and it is her belief that Blues not only comes from the African American experience but is actually directly influenced by Indigenous American Minor Pentatonic Melodies and Stomp Dance Songs. She occasionally offers master classes to educate people about the music that gives her so much pride in her Afro-Indigenous heritage.

"Saturday night the lead vocalists of the band were feeling under the weather and were unable to perform. Ron’s vocalist [Carly Harvey] came in on short notice and absolutely crushed the mic."

DC Funk Parade 2016 with Ron Holloway Band

"In keeping with the theme of this issue, promising young blues performers, I want to highlight one of our local rising stars who is just over the age of 30: Carly Harvey.  I first saw her perform with her band Kiss and Ride at JV’s Restaurant on a Sunday morning in June 2015 as part of the Tinner Hill Blues Festival.  At that point she already had her own single out, Love Me Like A Man.  Aside from her wonderful voice and joyous stage presence, my favorite aspect of her shows is her choice of material.  During that June show she sang Melody Gardot’s Your Heart Is As Black As Night and Imelda May’s Big Band Handsome Man.  More recently, in December 2017 at her Blue Monday performance at Westminster Church, Washington, DC she sang Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ 100 Days, 100 Nights along with Cee Lo Green’s Crazy.  It’s not just that she chooses different material, but she makes these songs her own.  When I asked her about her song choices, this is what she said: “… as far as my song choices what I love to do is play current songs that are derivative of blues that younger people who aren't necessarily in to the genre can connect to.   I like to present them in the context of blues with an intentional arrangement so the roots of blues can be heard and connected.  My shows usually have mixed age demographics because of that and that's one of my goals as a young person who loves blues and does not want it to die with my generation.”  Of course, I’m not her only local fan.  Dr. Nick at DC radio station WPFW named her DC’s queen of the blues.  Harvey has appeared at many area festivals and events including the main stage of the Tinner Hill Blues Festival in 2016 and the Columbia Pike Blues Festival in 2017.  Furthermore, her duo Carly & Sol with Music Maker Relief Foundation's next generation artist Sol Roots won the DC Blues Society’s Battle of the Bands Solo/Duo in 2016 and went to Memphis to compete in the international blues challenge.  I expect her star to continue to rise, since after all, she’s still very young!  For more information see her web site www.carlyharvey.com."
